Folsom Street
is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that both produces legendary events, including the iconic Folsom Street Fair, and operates a year-round community center (founded in 2021) to serve our communities with arts and culture programming, education, connection and visibility.
We have donated more than $7 million from the production of our events to nonprofit organizations since our founding in 1984.
MISSION
Folsom Street is committed to cultivating a safe, open, and inclusive environment for the kink, leather, and alternative sexuality communities while centering equity for BIPOC and LGBTQA2I+ people in our work. We are rooted historically in the fight against gentrification and displacement both here in San Francisco, on unceded Ohlone land, and worldwide. We unite, strengthen, and affirm the community through support, resources, education, advocacy, visibility, and celebration by centering and uplifting marginalized voices. We are dedicated to sexual liberation and the right to pleasure as a crucial part of the whole liberation movement.
Folsom Street is an explicitly anti-racist organization and we are committed to decolonizing our practices. We welcome feedback and guidance from our communities.
Director
Directors should be involved with Folsom Street for at least one year (or fair season) and need to be accepted by a vote. Generally, those interested in this level of service should serve one term at an associate level before seeking election to the board. Directors are voting members and are responsible for co-leading one of the events or center departments, working cooperatively to create and execute programming, and ensuring that all work serves the mission of Folsom Street. The commitment is for a full year (a motion to change this to a two year term is being considered for the upcoming term). Formal board meetings are held quarterly and are open to the public. Planning meetings are as frequent as weekly from June-October.
Associate Member
Associate board members are involved with Folsom Street in a specific department, committee or project. They are non-voting members and are encouraged to take a leadership role within one working group or committee. The committment is for one full year.
Super Volunteer
Super volunteers support Folsom Street in either event operations or with a specialized short-term project, rather than the ongoing commitments of an associate or board member. Super volunteers are required to attend a few meetings to ensure successful management of the project they’re committed to.
